A welcome message from the president

A welcome message from the president

Dear Friends and Faculty of HACIA Democracy,

Welcome to Harvard Association Cultivating Inter-American Democracy’s Twenty-Third Summit of the Americas! My name is Sophia Lugo, and I have the honor of serving as this year’s President, alongside the Vice-President Juan Pablo Miramontes. I am currently a third year student at Harvard University, studying History of Science and Neurobiology, with a minor in Health Policy. I was born on the border between Mexico and the US, and spent my childhood living in both countries. Upon arriving at Harvard, I joined the Model UN team and began staffing Harvard’s various Model UN conferences in several capacities. I joined HACIA XXI as the chair of the historical cabinet of Mexico’s Benito Juarez. In HACIA XXII, I served as the Spanish Committees Director.

In both these capacities, I fell in love with all aspects of the conference: our students’ passion and preparation, which surpassed anything I have seen on both the high school and college circuits; my fellow chairs’ commitment to Latin America and to helping students learn how to mold the future of our region in a positively impactful way; the advisors’ highly  admirable spirit as educators, mentors, friends of the conference, and support for our staff; and everyone’s commitment to our social purpose–to instill the values and tools of democracy in the context of our regions’ multifaceted issues into the future leaders of Latin America.

After meeting many of you all in the Riviera Maya of Mexico and in the beautiful capital of Costa Rica, I cannot wait to do it all over again. Our next conference will take place March 9th to March 12th, 2017, in Panama City, Panama. Make sure to look out for announcements posted here, on our Facebook page, or through our mailing list. We sincerely hope that you will be able to join us next year, whether as a brand new mind ready to face some of the most controversial questions of recent time facing Latin America, or as a seasoned delegate. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at [email protected] or to Recruiting Director Cristina Parajón at [email protected].

Hope to hear from you soon,

Sophia Lugo De Anda

This is a friendly, welcoming place, with a deep sense of community. Our students, faculty and staff contribute more than 50,000 hours to community service annually much of it locally. Our mission has always been to do more than prepare our students academically; we want to encourage these young men and women to work and live and make contributions to the human community for the rest of their lives.
